I like to observe nature’s cycles and notice how creative ideas change with seasons.
On the recent winter solstice I experienced something very unusual – no creative ideas at all! Instead of bright sparks I felt great heaviness and darkness, as in the depth of the soil laden with moisture and burden of life. I imagined Erda, the Earth Goddess being completely still, motionless, inert, and resting in deep sleep. So deep that the faint sun rays are not able to break through to initiate action.
It was an unsettling feeling of a creative void, but also a moment of a profound rest. It made me realize why light was at the centre of all winter solstice celebrations – to symbolically wake up the nature and thus ensure harmony of the light and darkness, masculine and feminine, creative and receptive forces throughout the next cycle.
If we are open, we can still learn from old traditions and old crafts. They help us understand the mystery of life and to consciously participate in its creative process.
Wishing you peaceful time of rest, reflection and regeneration.
