Bobbin Lace in Wire #19

Workshop: “OLD TREE”
Date: Saturday, May 26, 2018
Time: 10:30am – 5:30pm
Location: Ocean Park Community Hall, 1577 128th Street, Surrey, BC

Description:
This workshop is special, because it is open to all lacemakers – those who work in fibre, as well as those who prefer wirework. A popular Old Tree pattern accommodates both materials, and offers unique opportunity to combine traditional, precise bobbin lace technique with free form fibre or wire sculpting. Come and see how you can turn a simple torchon pattern in original lace art!

If you have not heard about this pattern before, here is the beginning of its story:

I designed the “Old Tree” a long time ago, when I was young, aspiring lacemaker and designer. It was one of my first designs in Torchon lace. Because my lace skills were limited then, I was using other ways to complete the pictures, like a collage, beadwork, and lots of free form fibre art. I only knew how to make a tree crown in lace, so I braided the tree branches and trunk from the thread ends. The picture of the old, wise three became very popular and I made many of them. So many, actually, that I worried I will never do anything else. They were fun to make, and open to variations in texture and colours, but I just knew there is more in lace… and there was…

Intrigued? Come to hear the rest of the fairy tale, and see how you can turn a simple torchon pattern into your own original fibre or wire lace art!
