Have you ever watched how snail explores unknown territory? How gently, carefully and  s_l_o_w_l_y  she proceeds? It is exactly how we are going to approach wire in lacemaking –  exploring it, touching it, shaping it and getting to know it –
slowly and mindfully.
The class project is designed for three skill levels:

1/Complete beginners will learn the basics of wire bobbin lace. There will be a lot of room for questions, answers, trials, and mistakes – yes – and at the end of the day they will all hide inside the snail’s little house. Instruction will cover: introduction to tools and material (enamelled copper wire), basic stitches – braid and half stitch  – adding beads, finishing, shaping wire lace to 3-D form.

2/ Lacemakers with some experience can work on Snail variation 2, with pattern consisting of braids, cloth stitch, and beaded gimp. This design will offer very good exercise for lacemakers who are transitioning from fibre to wire lace.

3/ Lacemakers who completed the Snail last year (it was variation 2) can expand their skills while working on the plaited lace Snail variation #3. It will include plaits with picots, tallies and beads.

Tools: bring your own lacemaking pillow (block, cookie or bolster), 12 pairs of bobbins for wire lace (Medium recommended), regular pins, . Other helpful tools: old scissors or jeweller’s wire clippers, flat pointed nose pliers, table lamp for crafts, with magnifying glass if you need magnification for fine work.

Tools for beginners: Student lacemaking pillow and bobbins will be provided for all beginners in the class and will be available for purchase after  – please let me know insnail advance if you need to borrow any tools. Cost of the kit (pillow with cover cloth, 8 pairs of bobbins, pins and crochet hook) is $80.
